RUDY DE LA MOR
Saturdays 6-9pm
After 35 years, Rudy de la Mor shows no sign of slowing down.
"I was in San Diego when a young man knocked on my dressing room," he remembers. The stranger asked for his most memorable moment, "I'll never forgot his name." The young man smile and said, "My name is Bill. I have AIDS and I'm supposed to be in the hospital right now, but I told my doctor that Rudy de la Mor was in town and I wanted to go see him. It just so happened that the doctor knew who you were. The doctor tol me, 'You go see Rudy. He's better than pills.'"
Wasn't that an honor? "
A gay icon. Yes, Rudy de la Mor continues to entertain the gay community. He almost didn't become a gay icon at all. After all, it isn't something the classically trained pianist would have considered when he studied at USC. Nor would it have been something he'd have recognized from his stints as a teenage member of the Orange County Symphony Orchestra and the Denver Symphony Orchestra.
But it was becoming Disneyland's very first full time pianist playing ragtime music for four years that launched a Hollywood star. and would become friends with late actress Mae West and comedian Martha Rae.
At a club called The Little Shrimp in Laguna Beach.... "Picture it, 1974. I'd never been in a gay bar in my entire life," he says. Sitting in for a Sunday afternoon set, "I played the piano, carried on and it all felt very natural. The guys were very kind to me." The owners calledthe week, hiring him for Sundays, Mondays and Tuesdays, where he stayed there for five successful years.
But it was the late Martha Raye who, after catching one of his early performances first told him that he had more of a comedic voice than a singing voice. "What's more, she suggested that I wear some of the curtains my mother might have had and change hats all night long," she proposed. "I didn't think the guys would go for it, but I still do it 34 years later. I'm Rudy de la Mor, the guy with the funny hats. It became my trademark."
Though piano bars had begun to disappear, this vibrant and energetic performer continued to work. "The people haven't changed who like this type of music," he says. "I'm working all the time." Today, hegoes where the piano bars are, icnluding performing for eight years at the Rainbow Cactus in Palm Springs, Ozz in Buena Park, and for 20 years at Gentry's in Chicago. More than Rosie O'donnel, Rudy has hosted more than a dozen Rudy de la Mor cruises, taking his fans to the Baltic and Russia.
In 2009, piano bars on making a dramatic comeback and Paradise is proud to feature a legend of the gay community. Rudy de la Mor cotninues to keep people laughing, smiling and singing along. This is one tough act to follow! Oh, and don't forget to bring your quarters.
